Keep Domain Registration & Hosting Separate

Posted on 28. Jan, 2010 by Martin PWPH in Webhosting

It is never a good idea to have all your eggs placed in the one basket. The same goes for setting up domain registrations and webhosting accounts. I prefer to keep them separate at all times instead of packing them together. In most cases this means not taking advantage of good webhosting deals that offer a free domain name registration for new users.

People usually take advantage of webhosting and domain registration deals as it enables them to save some money while keeping both the domain name and the hosting plan with the same company, often this makes setting up your first website quicker and hassle free.

Having your domain name registered with your hosting company can be problematic and might be a really bad idea. Over the years it is very likely that you will need or want to change your web host because your current host could either be running unstable or just not be upto the task of running your growing website.

So when it comes time to change your hosting, it will be a lot easier to redirect your domain name to a new hosting account. You will just have to log into your separate domain register account, change the DNS (Domain Name System) and within 24 to 48 hours your new website will be accessible. It will save you time and possibly money because usually when you transfer your domain name to another company they will charge you transfer fees and often take up to 5 days to transfer over to a new domain register.

Below are a couple domain registers that I highly recommend:

Enom – www.enom.com

Had a bad experience with having a domain name and hosting at one company. My host hosting company name removed went down for three days straight and support was feeding me bullshit the whole time. I signed up to another host after three days of downtime. I then asked for the domain to transferred to the new hosting company, now that’s where things got worse. All up that took another twelve days. By that time my site was offline for 15 days.

Thanks for your comment, some hosts do take their time transferring domains in hope you will stay on with them customer wise.

I also removed the hosting company name from your comment.

I have just been through hell with my current hosting provider because my domain name was registered with them.

I have 4 months left on my hosting contract and they will not let me transfer my domain to another register or even change dns till the last 4 months of the contract is finished up.

Over the past month my site had downtime of more then 6 days and just decided to not use the hosting account because it only had four months to go. So now I need to stick with this shit host till the 4 months is up just so I can use my domain :(

Most Domain Registrars are Web Hosting companies, there is logic in keeping domain and hosting separate but what happens if the company hosting your domain aka (the registrar) goes bad ? At this point, it matters not that you kept them separate.

Since most bad experiences have to do with hosting, I fail to see the logic in thinking a company can be both a bad host and at the same time a good place for domains. As far as I’m concerned once a bad company the same goes for all their services.

I think customers should demand better from companies, for one thing, there are too many websites out there claiming to have the best host, best deal, etc. Companies are pulling your strings, using deceptive tricks, it’s time the customers fight back.
